Travel Journal: Vol. #3

After nine months in Aransas Pass, Texas, we are hitting the road again! I must admit I was getting antsy to be on our way …after all, that is why we began this lifestyle in the first place. We are heading to our first workamp position in Custer, South Dakota – 1,348 miles away. Obviously we won’t be making this trip in a day!😆 We have decided to break our trip up with an extended stay in our first stop – Blanco, Texas.

When we made this choice for our first leg of the journey, it was because it is so centrally located to Fredricksburg, San Antonio, and Austin. I was in San Antonio 30 years ago, so I’m sure nothing has changed!🤷🏻‍♀️ Little did we realize how much there was going to be in the area just out our RV door!!

Blanco, TX

Our first day after our arrival we spent going to the grocery store and taking a ride around Blanco. Blanco is a small cattle and ranching community with a population of 1,780. Like many small towns, anchoring the historic downtown area is the town square. Sitting regally in the center of the square is the Old Blanco County courthouse. This impressive historic building is now home to the Blanco Visitor Center.

Entering the visitor center we were greeted by a cheerful “Welcome to Blanco!” As our eyes adjusted to the interior light we saw a small desk with a woman sitting there with a bright, friendly smile. She introduced herself as Victoria, and couldn’t have been more helpful. She gave us a list of area breweries, distilleries, and wineries to check out. We also left with a list of restaurants in the area we definitely need to visit.

Now to sit down and plan out our excursions. The perfect place to start is the cute little cafe across the street from the courthouse – Redbud Cafe. Zack and I split a colossal hamburger that was delicious! The guys next to us got Rueben sandwiches that looked to die for, so we will definitely be planning another trip back to try that one!
